Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $134,152)

Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) aims to develop the leadership and the formation of young people living in the Bronx River and Bruckner/Soundview neighborhoods of the South Bronx for a life of peace and justice. Located in the poorest congressional district and in a neighborhood burden by a host of environmental hazards, our youth have to decide how to navigate in their community. Faced with many options to participate in destructive activities, our youth need a program that provides an alternative. With our youth development/youth organizing programs, we have found that by creating an after school program where youth can attain the tools, skills, resources, and opportunities to become leaders, many youth will choose to become role models in the community.
