Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $380,098)

The Marion County Kids First initiative will provide the necessary resources to local community service programs, primarily focused on families at high-risk for drug abuse and their children, with the goal of breaking the cycle of intergenerational drug abuse, crime, and family violence prevalent in Marion County. The Kids First Initiative will achieve this goal by partnering with social service agencies and nonprofit organizations that focus on prevention, treatment, and intervention. Up to 200 high-risk families and children will be served over a one-year period. Progress will be measured by the number of families participating in intensive home visits, completing parenting classes, substance abuse treatment, counseling and job training programs; and by the number of participants who do not return to the juvenile justice system for at least a six-month period following treatment/education.
