Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $268,305)

The Attendance Centers: Working Toward a Brighter Future is a collaborative prevention effort of the Sacramento Police Department, the County of Sacramento, Sacramento school districts, and community-based organizations. The program's primary goal is to redirect truant students toward consistent school attendance and educational attainment and away from substance abuse, gang involvement, and criminal activity. The program's strategies focus on operating three attendance centers during the 2008-2009 school year, which will provide services such as helping truants and their parents to understand and solve the problems that lead to truancy, such as difficult family situations, involvement with drugs or gangs, lack of school success, or other personal issues. Performance measures will include: counseling outcomes and crime statistics in areas surrounding participating schools. NCA/NCF
