Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $223,587)

Youth Services seeks to improve the quality and longevity of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring matches and to expand the number of mentor matches across a broader service area. The target population is children between the ages of 6-18. In addition, the project will recruit participants for regional volunteer teams to make referrals for mentees and adult mentors in the underserved areas of Windham County. Increasing recruitment efforts to attract additional volunteers will help ensure more youth are mentored and mentors are provided training to produce longer-term mentor commitment. The goal of the program is to deter mentees from delinquent behaviors by helping them resist illegal drug use, underage drinking, truancy, and acts of violence. Performance measures will include: satisfaction levels of new mentors and the corresponding progress of new mentee participants. Additionally, the geographical reach of the program will be tracked since a major goal is to expand into underserved portions of this large rural county. NCA/NCF
