Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $910,000)

Founded in 1882, KidsPeace is dedicated to serving the behavioral and mental health needs of children and youth. KidsPeace currently operates 35 therapeutic foster care programs, and each of which is contoured to the unique needs of the youth and families in their region. All KidsPeace programs are built around the KidsPeace Model of Care: six core values that include dignity, safety, relationships and belonging, empowerment, character, and transformation. KidsPeace seeks to establish new therapeutic foster care programs in New Haven County, Connecticut, Baltimore County, Maryland, Providence County, Rhode Island, and Alexandria, Virginia. The goal will be to prevent and reduce delinquent behaviors by providing safe and supportive therapeutic foster homes for children who suffer from mental health problems within the foster care systems of these states.

Families from these communities will be recruited, trained, and certified to care for children with emotional and behavioral needs. Data on performance measures will be gathered on an ongoing basis through the systemic structure of the newly established KidsPeace therapeutic foster care programs. Each youth's discharge placement is tracked in the internal KidsPeace system. Furthermore, discharge and educational outcomes are publicly reported on an annual basis.
