Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $299,996)

The Village of Napaskiak is a remote and isolated Alaskan Native village, 400 miles from Anchorage. The intent of this project is to provide prevention services to impact risk factors for delinquency. The project will target 92 youth 17 years of age and younger and will focus on after-school and school-based activities, year-round. The project will seek to identify risk factors, develop a truancy prevention program, a school dropout prevention program, an after school program, and parenting education programs and reintroduce youth to their Yup'ik culture and traditional practices. In addressing these problems, the Village of Napaskiak community will seek to attain the goal of decreasing the drop out and truancy rate by 50%, educate teen parents, and provide intervention services to prevent delinquency.
