Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $300,000)

The Yurok Tribe will operate the Yurok Youth program with a goal of preventing juvenile delinquency by offering youth-centered and family-centered prevention activities based in Yurok culture and values. The program will take place at three different tribal facilities and in the field and will use strategies such as involving young Yuroks in traditional cultural activities, engaging youth in service learning, and providing youth with wrap-around services to inoculate them against the temptations of drugs, alcohol, gangs and other behaviors that often result in juvenile delinquency. Performance measures will include: the number of at-risk youth/families participating and the level of participation for each young person and family; each participating young person's level of involvement in service learning; pre- and post-program school attendance for participants; and the recidivism rate for program participants.
