Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $200,000)

The City of San Diego Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention proposes funding to support the implementation of the Commission's purpose to develop a more strategic, coordinated, and collaborative effort between the City, law enforcement agencies, social service providers, and the general public with the objective of significantly curtailing gang involvement, and its negative impact. The Commission will focus on youth up to 24 years old who in live in the Encanto neighborhoods. Funding will help support San Diego's law enforcement's anti-gang strategies with: primary prevention, secondary prevention and intervention strategies to address local risk factors for gang involvement. The coordination team which includes the San Diego Police Department, will improve communication and collaboration of existing partners in the areas, facilitate more focused discussions about youth within the community and allow for monitoring of program success. Sustaining this coordinated approach will be part of the development of policies and protocols of the Commission and will become one of its strategic goals during the life of the grant. CA/NCF
