Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $197,354)
The Montgomery County, Department of Health and Human Services proposes the Community-based Collaboration (CBC) program to develop collaborative, public-private strategies to reduce gang activity, in the target area of Germantown, Silver Spring, and Wheaton, Maryland. The targeted areas within the counties have significant Latino and African American populations, higher poverty rates, substantiated gang activity, and other factors that put youth at risk for gang involvement. The CBC program intends to decrease gang activity and gang-related crime in Montgomery County through enhanced coordination of community-based prevention and intervention. Furthermore, the CBC program will measure the increase in life skills/pro-social behaviors, improve school attendance and academic performance, pro-social involvement in school or community activities and increase expectations/understanding of post-secondary work and learning.
