The Amachi Texas mission is to break the intergenerational cycle of crime and incarceration by helping children of prisoners reach their maximum potential through safe, positive relationships with a caring adult in their community. The Amachi Texas vision is to successfully implement this innovative statewide pilot initiative, achieve successful outcomes, and build a program infrastructure to reach thousands of at-risk children across the state while establishing a replicable model for the nation. To assist with these goals, OJJDP funded the first of a 3-year rigorous evaluation designed to determine the impact of Amachi Texas on outcomes for children impacted by incarceration.
The longitudinal study will determine whether and under what circumstances the program: 1) provides a caring adult to children impacted by incarceration; 2) delivers character strengthening adult support to youth that are at the greatest risk; 3) contributes to improved outcomes and positive development of youth, and 4) potentially serves as an evidence-based national model that empirically demonstrates what can be accomplished when 'People of Texas Mentor Children of Promise.'
