Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $830,000)

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America will advance their present practice of quality mentoring and reach an increased number of at-risk Hispanic children in 40 lead BBBS agencies. The OJJDP funding will enable BBBS to go from serving 15,473 Hispanic children in a piloted Hispanic Mentoring Initiative program to a projected 23,917 in 2008. BBBS's current reach into the Hispanic community is low in proportion to the numbers in the population, and disproportionate to the number of children at risk. A special emphasis on serving children who are at or below the poverty line, including those whose parents are incarcerated, and those who do not live with two parents will be paramount in this project.
