Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $246,807)
The Muckleshoot Indian Reservation will implement a gang intervention program to address the 200% increase in gang activity since 2004; which has contributed to the rising rates of truancy and drop-outs among Muckelshoot youth at the Tribal School and the public school systems that adjoin the Reservation. This program will assist participants with the development of decision-making skills through social competence, problem solving, personal responsibility and autonomy while fostering a sense of hope and purpose. Culturally appropriate activities will focus on strategies to develop coping systems. Progress will be tracked and measured by the youth's disassociation with gang members and activities, shown by a decrease in contact with the criminal justice system and school discipline, and by a decrease in school absences of each participant.NCA/NCF
