Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $24,681)
Many students come home from school and go right on-line to Internet chat rooms. Pedophiles hide behind their keyboards in perceived anonymity where they can seduce and sexually exploit their vulnerable targets. The Suffolk County Police Department Computer Crimes Section has aggressively investigated on-line sexual exploitation of children and the proliferation of child pornography via the Internet. Since the creation of the Computer Crimes Section in 2001, the unit has made over forty-five arrests for possessing or promoting child pornography over the Internet and seventy-five arrests for soliciting a minor for sex over the Internet. The proposed project seeks to reduce the vulnerability of children to victimization by Internet predators by educating students, parents and teachers concerning the dangers posed by the Internet and how to protect children from those dangers. The project's primary activity will be to provide presentations to student, parent, teacher and community groups concerning Internet safety for children.
