The primary goal of this proposed research project is to reduce online sexual victimization of children and adolescents. This goal will be achieved by using a multi-prong approach to examining this problem from three different perspectives. A secondary goal of this project is to study the evolution and impact of adult and child pornography on Internet sexual offenders. This two-year project proposes to build on pilot work supported by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) in three important ways: (1) by conducting in-depth structured interviews of a large, diverse sample of Internet sexual offenders, (2) by examining the age spectrum of exposure to, use of, and technical familiarity with Internet pornography in high school students, college students and offenders, and (3) by reviewing the efficacy of existing child protection software with recommendations for the next 'generation' of such filters.
The purpose of this proposed project is to advance the much-needed empirical research required to combat online sexual victimization of children and adolescents and improve Internet safety strategies.
