Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $740,422)

The Latin American Youth Center will implement the Youth Empowerment and Success gang-prevention, diversion, and intervention program will target gang-involved and at-risk for gang-involvement youth in Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland. Primary goals are to improve leadership and life skills among participants, reduce gang-involvement among participants, and enhance community partnerships. Primary activities include: 1) school-based prevention program for middle and high school students; 2) after school and summer prevention and diversion programs; 3) prevention and diversion programming for youth that have dropped out of school; 4) intensive intervention services for gang-involved youth, and 4) community outreach and education. The Latin American Youth Center will track progress by reporting performance measures such as number of youth exhibiting desired change in behavior to OJJDP. NCA/NCF
