Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $197,446)

The Detroit Youth Citizen's Police Academy will be geared toward young adults between the ages of thirteen (13) and nineteen (19) years of age. This Academy will prepare the participant with career development, proper etiquette and job interview skills, and instruction on the operation of the Detroit Police Department. In addition, the Youth Citizens Police Academy will provide youth with a better understanding police policies and procedures. Intended outcomes of this program include: increased cooperation between the police department and the youth within the City of Detroit; possible candidates for the Detroit Police academy; increased youth engagement in neighborhoods/schools; increased participation of target area families in education and training programs; increased partnership between law enforcement, judicial, and community development efforts; decline in youth participants' involvement in illegal drugs, crime and violence; and sustainable community problem-solving partnerships.NCA/NCF
