Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $98,723)

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, Inc. will implement the Project SCREAM Program (Safe Cultural and Recreational Enrichment with Adult Mentors) to at-risk youth; age 6-18, in the Third Ward of Houston, Texas. The primary goals are 1) to prevent or divert the use and abuse of substances within the community; 2) increase school attendance and decrease school dropout rates; 3) to increase safe and drug-free alternative school and environments; and 4) collaborate with community agencies, schools, and law enforcement in their efforts to reduce substance abuse. The primary activities will include 1) after school, weekend and summer activities (sports, cultural, and volunteer); 2) community outreach on prevention activities targeting crime and drug abuse; 3) peer group meetings targeting substance use prevention; 4) alternative educational program; 5) provide services to youth in Madge Bush Transitional Homeless Facility; and 6) service referral and housing support.NCA/NCF
