Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $197,446)

The city of Hoboken, New Jersey will implement the Save the Youth prevention and intervention project to at-risk middle- and high-school students. The primary goals will be to 1) reduce gang involvement and gang-related activities; 2) to increase self-esteem in participating youth; 3) increase youth awareness of the impact of violence and gang activity; and 4) improve academic achievement and attainment of participating youth. The primary activities will include 1) after school, evening and weekend educational and community-based services; 2) direct counseling services to at-risk youth; 3) life-skills activities; 4) training in effective communication, conflict management, decision-making, time management and leadership; and 5) civic engagement and community service activities.
