Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $493,614)

Goucher College will establish the Community Service Center on its campus in Baltimore County, Maryland. The center will be both a physical facility and a series of programs that will offer prevention strategies to address juvenile delinquency and child victimization. The activities at the center will explore the efficacy of simultaneous, multi-faceted actions to improve the lives, not just the formal education, of elementary- and middle-school students living in economically distressed areas of Baltimore City and Baltimore County. In addition to mentoring and cultural enrichment activities to be held at school sites and on the college campus, the project will create workshops and intensive seminar training/prevention opportunities for teachers, families, and students. Goucher College will report progress through performance measures such as number of participating youth who offend, who exhibit targeted behavior change, and who successfully complete the program.
