Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $98,723)

The Gilroy Gang and Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force in collaboration with Fresh Lifelines for Youth seeks to address juvenile crime through a cognitive-based program that develops assets in adjudicated youth and transforms delinquent youth into positive community leaders. Legal Eagle is a 13-week violence prevention law course that will meet after school weekly for two hours, serving at least 150 youth over a 3-year period. Legal Eagle aims to: help youth understand the serious consequences of criminal behavior; build their assets in personal responsibility, non-violent conflict resolution, problem solving, anger management, communication, victim empathy, as well as respect for authority; and develop the life skills to choose against crime. The Task Force will report on performance measures such as improvements in social competence and school attendance, and decreases in antisocial and gang related activities.NCA/NCF
