Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $296,169)
The Phoenix House of Los Angeles will utilize grant funds to support activities in two Phoenix House locations: Phoenix Academy at Lake View Terrace and Phoenix Academy at Descanso. The Lake View Terrace Academy is a residential high school that provides long-term treatment for boys and girls, ages 13 to 18, with substance abuse and behavioral problems. Phoenix House aims to increase the Academy's outreach within the County to reach more youth before their drug use escalates, endangering their health and their futures, and possibly leading to criminal activity. To achieve this, staff will target underserved populations, parents, schools, churches, family centers, and social workers through increased direct and electronic contacts in the community and through educational workshops. Effectiveness of these efforts will be measured against previous years' outreach statistics, inquiries, and increases in numbers of youth served. At the Descanso location, Phoenix House aims to strengthen family services, which include Individual Family Therapy, Parent Education Curriculum, Multi-Family Group Therapy, and Recreation. Standardized assessment and evaluation tools will be used to measure improvements in family functioning and coping, communication, and parenting skills which will be reported to OJJDP. NCA/NCF
