Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $98,723)

Through the Armory Prep program, 200 students a year receive college counseling and athletic coaching. This counseling is designed to build on the students' strengths, encourage improved attendance in school, and encourage hope for their future through improved college attendance rates. The program also encourages strong and positive relationships between adults and youths and improves social behaviors.
The Armory Prep program seeks to serve underprivileged students in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York with the opportunity to participate in the athletic and college guidance programs, track and field skills building clinics, and college fairs. They will also recruit students who participate in the Armory track team meetings, and outreach will occur at the summer running camps, the Empire Games, and contacts by high school coaches. The Armory will sponsor a series of athletic skill building workshops as a reward for students who have been participating in Armory Prep. The Armory will bring in well known track athletes and coaches for clinics and mentoring sessions. The Armory Foundation has built a solid administrative infrastructure and network that will prove to be successful in helping many underprivileged students gain admission to college. The plan for evaluation will allow the Armory Foundation to track its success and the impact of its work with Armory Prep participants. NCA/NCF
