Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $246,807)

The American Sail Training Association (ASTA) program will provide positive life changing experiences through member tall ships and sail training vessels for youth in underserved communities. ASTA and local member affiliates will work closely in identifying at-risk youth to build self confidence and impart team building, social leadership skills, in participating youth through positive life forming experiences; rasing awareness of the benefit and power of sail training; increasing organizational capacity in order to more effectively accomplish the above goals; and providing professional development opportunities for sail trainers and marine educators and expanding the sail training industry's knowledge base by introducing new youth developing concepts and ideas.
