Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $493,614)

Youth For Tomorrow (YFT) is a residential home, counseling center, and private school for at-risk males and females ages 11-19. With a licensed capacity of 88 residents, YFT receives referrals from the juvenile justice system and departments of social services. The focus of YFT is rehabilitation and education recovery in a structured environment. Young men and women referred to YFT are at-risk for one, or more typically, a combination of criminal behavior patterns, poor academic performance (including expulsion), substance abuse, sexual abuse, or in need of foster care due to abuse, abandonment, or removal from the home. Funds from this grant will be used to establish and staff an Academic Resource Center (ARC) in YFT's special education secondary school to provide individualized instruction in specific skill areas, using classroom content as the substance of the remediation. Performance measures include: (1) number of students receiving individualized instruction; (2) utilization of ARC to reduce the number of self-contained students; (3) number of students receiving diagnostic and assessments through ARC; (4) number of students mainstreamed after participating in ARC; (5) number of ARC student/hours before returning to mainstream classroom; (6) number of students with academic difficulties removed from mainstream classrooms to ARC; and (7) number of disciplinary actions recorded.NCA/NCF
