Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2005, $197,329)

Liberty's Promise intends to contribute to the long-term goal of gang reduction by giving 50 immigrant adolescents an outlet for professional growth and a chance to more thoroughly understand American political culture. The project will support documented immigrant youth in need, ages 15-21, by placing them in 8- to 10-week internships in government, the media, for-profit and non-profit businesses throughout the Washington, DC, Metro Area. At the conclusion of the internship, these adolescents will take part in a civics course designed to reinforce values of responsibility and the citizen's participation in the community. The project coordinator will use a series of pre- and post-participation evaluative tools to measure the effectiveness of the project and report these findings to OJJDP via GMS. NCA/NCF
