Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2005, $197,329)

Jumpstart's mission is to work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. With this Congressional Earmark Grant, Jumpstart Tallahassee, in partnership with Florida State University (FSU), will utilize the national Jumpstart program model to recruit, train and support 80 Jumpstart college student Mentors each year as they work to meet the project's objectives. Jumpstart Tallahassee college student Mentors deliver an innovative early literacy program via yearlong one-to-one relationships with preschool children in low-income communities. The project's three main immediate-term outcomes will ensure that these children: 1) engage more in classroom activities, 2) demonstrate greater interest in books and reading, 3) engage peers and adults in an appropriate manner. To assess these objectives, Jumpstart Tallahassee engages in a comprehensive assessment program using a 15-item School Success Checklist to track children's progress throughout the year. Jumpstart college student Mentors are assessed as well.
