Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2005, $449,001)
The Juvenile and Family Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Juvenile and Family Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The Program supports the following activities: Juvenile drug court implementation, Family drug court implementation, Single jurisdiction drug court enhancement, Statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts. The Hopi Tribe will use this implementation grant to support a family drug court. The Hopi Family Wellness Court (HFWC) will enhance the likelihood of family reunification by increasing personal, familial and system accountability through compliance with the Adoption and Safe Families Act. Parents are eligible for drug court if they allegedly, through formal court petition, neglected their children, primarily due to substance use/abuse problems. The grantee will report performance measures that include 1) number of participants arrested for drug charges while participating in the drug court and 2) number of graduates (participants who have completed all treatment).
