Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $98,945)

The goal of Richmond Midnight Basketball League (RMBL) is to help underserved, at risk youth become responsible and productive citizens. Its goal is to keep youth from crime and direct them towards improving their lives. RMBL will design its program for 120 boys and girls, aged 15-18, by offering the opportunity to play organized basketball. By linking mandatory workshops with playing in league games, outreach is offered to young people in a way no other medium can duplicate. This approach of combining mandatory workshops with basketball opportunities, complemented by individual counseling referrals, constitutes one of the most effective ways to help our underserved youth. RMBL offers hoops and a safe haven alternative to the dangerous streets. NCA/NCF
