Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $49,474)

In response to the needs of the lowest performing at-risk K-12 students within the school district, Hacienda La Puente Unified School District (HLPUSD) developed an intergenerational volunteer program called Seniors With Interests In New Generations (SWING). SWING's primary goals are: 1) to improve academic proficiency in reading literacy, English language development, and math, through one-on one or small group assistance in the classroom and other related school efforts, programs, and activities, and 2) to provide a critical intermediary extension of the school-home connection, through utilization of senior-aged volunteers. The grantee will use existing evaluation and assessment methods, data collection instruments and diligent security measures and instruments to measure program performance.

Los Robles Academy will measure change in academic proficiency levels, English language proficiency, attendance and truancy, suspensions and expulsions, and participation in student leadership.

The grantee will report these measures to OJJDP in their Categorical Assistance Progress Reports.
