Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $98,945)

The Institute for International Sport will implement a youth leadership development program called Rhode Island Scholar- Athlete Games (RISAG). RISAG targets at risk Rhode Island youth in grades 3 to 8 and facilitates a ten day program held at the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College. The program provides recreational and cultural events that are designed to engender a cross-cultural approach that engenders goodwill, sportsmanship and understanding among youth. RISAG develops team building and problem solving skills during the event and provides 50 youth with opportunities for future educational success. Youth activities provide anti-drug and anti- violence lessons and promote positive choice. The Institute will report performance measures that indicate participants have an enhanced self esteem and a increasednumber of students who remain in school.
