Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $247,369)
The Saginaw Art Museum fosters educational, cultural and economic growth in Saginaw, Michigan through interactive programs for youth and collaborations with community organizations that strengthen community participation in the arts. Saginaw Art Museum's program goals include: 1) providing interactive activities and space for community-based arts education programming that respond to the needs of youth who are at social risk; 2) developing new art education programs and extra-curricular activities that address the needs of at-risk youth from the inner city and underserved rural areas; and 3) forming partnerships with schools, community organizations and agencies concerned with the activities of adolescence youth. The Curator of Education and the Executive Director will assess programming through a variety of measuring tools, such as: Museum and program/activity attendance figures, comment cards, personal interviews with teachers/administrators, school records and community statistics to show increased arts education opportunities for low-income families and at-risk youth.
