The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition's Sistas and Brothas United (SBU) will provide positive alternatives to area gangs and provide leadership opportunities through its civic leaders program, and will help prepare students for college or work through its tutoring program. The civic leaders program will serve 120 students ages 12-20 (most will be 14-17) coming from low income families in the west Bronx. Of these 120 participants, 50 will be enrolled in the academic tutoring project. Performance measures will include the development of leadership skills among all participants, regular attendance and improved grades by at least 60% of tutoring participants, with at least 50% of the tutored students showing improvement on the New York Regents test.NCA/NCF
The Sistas and Brothas United (SBU) Youth Leadership and Tutoring Program will provide leadership development training and academic support to high school youth in northwest Bronx, who are at risk of gang and drug involvement. The Youth Leadership Program provides opportunities for high school youth to participate in community development and civic engagement. The effectiveness of these programs will be measured through a series of pre and post tests associated with the capacity of the students to successfully become civic leaders in their community and to improve their academic preparation and performance in the SBU and Leadership Institute High School.NCA/NCF
