Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $98,948)

The Alaska Federation of Natives OJJDP is to reduce underage drinking in rural Alaska by coordinating the development of a statewide underage drinking prevention plan and designing and delivering a "grassroots peer-led approach" drinking prevention curriculum tailored for rural Alaska. To achieve this, AFN proposes the following strategies: AFN will work with state, federal, tribal and private stakeholders to facilitate a coordinated approach to the prevention of underage drinking in rural Alaska; Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has an established underage drinking program in Alaska through its chapters in Juneau and Anchorage. The overall goals of the Youth In Action Guide are to create youth/adult partnerships; to involve youth in leading the way to reduce youth access to alcohol ; to hold both youth and adults accountable for the tragedy of underage drinking and for preventing it ; and to show that youth have a voice.
