Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $296,835)

Brooklyn Academy of Music will provide arts based educational programs to at risk students and their families in Brooklyn, NY. Educational programs such as Brooklyn Reads, a literacy project for children in Brooklyn schools and their families; the screening series, a film literacy program for high school students; Shakespeare Teaches, an in-school arts residency program for students and teachers are provided in workshops that focus on reading improvement and enhancing the appreciation of arts performance or film. Brooklyn Academy of Music's goal is to improve the educational achievement of students through the use of arts programs. In addition, BAM will collaborate with public and private groups, such as the Bedford Stuyvesant restoration Corporation to develop a community initiative. The performance measures of this program include increased understanding of performance and improved reading skills of the participants.
