The South Carolina Department of Education (SDE) proposes to develop the South Carolina Truancy and Dropout Prevention Initiative (SCTDPI). This will be a statewide strategic effort to curtail school dropouts, court appearances, the secure confinement of status offenders, and truancy in the State. OJJDP funds will be used to develop innovative technologies to identify and track youth at-risk for truancy, to establish alternative community- and school-based programs, and to create the South Carolina Center for Dropout and Truancy Prevention Programs. The initiative will offer multiple strategies for keeping these youth out of the juvenile justice system and fostering their development into contributing citizens.
