Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2003, $99,350)

The purpose of A Lift Up (ALU) is to increase targeted youth's social competency and school success while decreasing the likelihood they will become involved in gangs and crime by linking them with activities and services offered during out-of-school hours. ALU will serve youth, ages 10-17, who have been involved with the juvenile justice system or have other risk factors or who have a sibling or parent who is incarcerated, on parole or probation.

ALU will engage high-risk children in ways that keep them active and safe. The objectives are to improved life skills and school performance, increased physical activity, and more involved parents or guardians. The objectives will be achieved through the provision of academic assistance, life skills, recreation, sports, culture and arts activities and family education/involvement.
