Birmingham Educational Technology Center: Educational Success for At-Risk Youth

The Birmingham Educational Technology Center (BETC) was originally developed as a partnership among fourteen agencies, organizations, and community groups, and was initially funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Under the current grant, BETC plans to provide computer access and instruction to youth at risk of academic failure, as well as to youth who have already dropped out of school. The goal of the project is to assist students in developing the educational and life skills necessary to achieve their educational and career goals. During the award period, the Center will provide services to 40 junior high school youth, 60 high school students, and 30 high school dropouts (all under the age of 18). All participants will begin by receiving a comprehensive academic assessment. This assessment will form the basis for the development of a set of individualized goals and objectives for each youth. Each youth will then work with an academic counselor to devise a strategic plan for achieving his/her goals during the upcoming year.
