Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2003, $298,050)
The Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center " Mind Body and Spirit Program will provide literacy, nutrition and recreation services to youth ages 3 to 19 in Wyoming Valley,Pennsylvania. The Recreation services( Spirit) will provide activities in critical non school hours and will be an alternative to delinquent behavior. The Nutrition services(Body) will provide instruction by a qualified nutritional staff to education children about healthy habits. The Literacy services( Mind) will provide a safe environment to foster improved reading skills and appreciation for literature.The Wyoming Valley center staff will utilize a computer program to train and educate students on reading improvement tools. The goals of the program are to provide youth with healthy alternatives to dangerous behaviors and to support their development from childhood into the adolescence through the establishment of strong role models and through constant positive reinforcement.
