Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2003, $1,986,968)

This award will support the C.A.L. (Character, Academics, Leadership) Community Baseball Program; a pilot project from the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, assist kids from disadvantaged backgrounds in finding a path to success that includes team sports, sound character development, a healthy lifestyle and enlivened academics. This project will address some of the root causes of juvenile crime and violence: lack of physical education opportunities; the appeal of drugs, alcohol and tobacco; and the perceived irrelevance of school.
