JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINUENCY PREVENTION CONGRESSIONAL EARMARK PROGRAMS

The Pinellas County will provide after school activities for male and female youth ages 6 to 17 residing near the Rainbow Village Public Housing Complex. The programs goals and objectives will be to improve the academic performance of the youth, learn computer skills, teach youth life skills and provide supervised recreational activities that enhance youths self esteem in a safe and drug free environment. The Pinellas County will provide performance measures for this program which will include: 1) improved grades; 2) computer skills as measured by a pre and post test; 3) increased knowledge about life skills, and 4) reduced the number of drug related activities. These measures will be reported to OJJDP in the grantees Categorical Assistance Progress Report (CAPR) reports.

This is the third year of funding for the Pinellas County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office through a contract with the Pinellas County Police Athletic League, Inc., (PAL) to continue the implementation and expansion of an after school and summer program to at least 800 youth in the County. Through collaboration and partnerships with the YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club, as well as an alternative public school and a local church, the program has increased it presence to four additional sites in the County. PAL will be providing tutoring and homework assistance, recreational activities, vocational life skills training and opportunities for positive social interactions between police officers and youth in a safe, drug free supervised environment. The Pinellas County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office through a contract with the Pinellas County Police Athletic League, Inc., (PAL) will continue to provide year-round after school and summer program to at least 1,100 youth ages six to seventeen who reside in Pinellas County. The Pinellas After School Program will provide educational, recreational and sports activities in a safe, drug free and supervised environment. Of the approximately 1,100 participants in the PAL program data will be collected that will measure the impact of the program's effort in providing academic and recreation services to the target population.
