Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2002, $400,710)

The Iberia Parish Council will use grant funds to establish a family-focused juvenile drug court. The juvenile drug court expects to treat 150 juveniles and their families over the 2-year grant period. The court will strive to reduce substance abuse and related criminal activity in high-risk adolescents through family-focused treatment services. Juvenile drug court services will include intensive judicial supervision, treatment, graduated sanctions and incentives, and frequent mandatory drug testing. Each youth will participate in an extensive, four phased treatment program for a duration of approximately 12 months. Treatment services will be provided to the youth and families in the treatment clinic and in the families' homes. The juvenile drug court will also work closely with the school system to monitor the youths' class attendance and educational progress. An independent evaluator will conduct process and outcome evaluations to gauge program effectiveness.
