The Selma Housing Authority is the fiscal agent for the Selma Substance Abuse Coalition. The coalition serves Selma, Alabama, an economically disadvantaged urban community 50 miles west of Montgomery with a population that is 73% African American. Consistent to the goals of the Drug-Free Communities Support Program, the Selma Substance Abuse Coalition plans to address substance abuse by focusing on youth aged 13 to 18, and to enhance and strengthen collaboration among governmental and non-profit agencies in Selma. The coalition will implement the following strategies to achieve these goals:
1) increase the number of youth voluntarily involved in coalition activities through recruitment and advertising;
2) increase the number of participants doing well in school or GED program by 25% of participants by providing one-on-one tutoring in academic subjects and computer access through the Selma Youth Development Center;
3) increase the number of youth with less favorable attitudes about alcohol/marijuana by 75% through a media campaign focused on changing community and social norms; and
4) increase community collaboration through active involvement in communication mechanisms, participation in joint programs and meetings with various partners in the community.
