Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $99,448)
The Boys and Girls Club of Perry/Taylor County is the fiscal agent for the Taylor Invests in Prevention Strategies (T.I.P.S.) Coalition. The Coalition's target area, Taylor County, Florida, has a population of 19,231, 18 percent of which lives below the poverty level. The T.I.P.S. Coalition targets Taylor County youth as well as parents and community members and employs a comprehensive, multi-sector and multi-strategy approach to address the usage rates of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and cocaine. The coalition also leverages existing resources by weaving current programs together to reach all Taylor County students with prevention education and alternatives to drug use. In order to achieve the dual goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and of increasing collaboration within the community, the Coalition employs the following strategies:
1. Change community attitudes toward alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD);
2. Reduce the accessibility and availability of ATOD to youth;
3. Increase sense of belonging within the community;
4. Increase parenting skills and parental knowledge of ATOD prevention;
5. Improve student academic performance; and
6. Increase age of first use of ATOD;
