Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $80,554)
The Flathead Valley Chemical Dependency Clinic is the fiscal agent to the Flathead Prevention Alliance that serves Flathead County, Montana. In the northwest corner of Montana, the coalition serves an area with a population of 76,000 where half its population is considered rural and the other half is considered urban. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults, and of strengthening community anti-drug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) provide educational and training experiences to promote positive assets within the community, school, family, and individual/peer domains;
2) disseminate youth-designed environmental and educational media pieces that address youth perceptions about the dangers of substance use and that encourage a community norm of disapproval;
3) support increased participation and collaboration among all sectors of the community by furthering the development of the Prevention Alliance and community oriented coalition activities;
4) expand the media campaign to increase awareness of youth drug problems; and
5) expand the Youth Advisory Council concept in order to facilitate greater youth involvement with youth prevention programs.
