The Cowlitz Wahkiakum Council of Governments is the fiscal agent for the Cowlitz Substance Abuse Coalition. The coalition serves Cowlitz County in southwest Washington. The region has a population of 94,400 and a mix of urban and rural geographical areas. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults in Cowlitz County by addressing risk factors and enhancing protective factors; and, 2) strengthen community infrastructure for collaboration, data collection, partnership opportunities, resource development, sustainability, and capacity to support the efforts of community coalitions and their prevention activities. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase opportunities for parents to receive parenting skills training;
2) increase family-oriented activities;
3) reduce underage drinking among the youth of Cowlitz County;
4) collaborate with faith-based charities to build capacity within the coalition;
5) increase opportunities for mentoring between adults/teens and children;
6) increase collection of local youth substance abuse data;
7) increase intervention services available in local schools;
8) increase opportunities for coalition members to collaborate on activities.
