Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $98,396)
The Mifflin County Heroin Task Group/Mifflin County Communities That Care« serves Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, a suburban area with a population of 46,500. The program goals are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth through education in Mifflin County schools and communities, and 2) establish and strengthen collaboration among the Mifflin County Heroin Task Group, the Downtown Lewistown business community, the downtown Lewistown neighborhood, and the Mifflin County Regional Police. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) provide a school resource office that will create a positive presence in the Mifflin County middle and high schools and will be supported by the Mifflin County Regional Police as needed;
2) implement P.U.L.S.E. Club (People Using Leadership Skills Effectively) in the middle and high schools of the Mifflin County School District for the purpose of breaking down stereotypes among students through leadership skills and a drug-free message; 3) support an active police presence at a new satellite location to deter downtown drug and crime activity;
4) expand neighborhood watch areas for community policing and to enhance neighborhood standards; and
5) particpate as a partner in the Be Aware and Care Fair, a community event that delivers a strong drug-free message to adolescent youth and their families.
