Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $49,705)
Lockport Township High School District 205 serves as the fiscal agent for the Lockport Area Consortium for Substance Abuse Professionals (LACSAP). The coalition serves the schools and communities of Lockport, Crest Hill, Homer Glen and parts of unincorporated Will County, Illinois with a total target population of 72,040. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug collaborations, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the perception of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs by providing science based prevention curriculum to students at local elementary schools;
2) provide substance abuse awareness, education and training to parents by holding community forums/presentations on the link between parenting skills and alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention;
contracting trained parent facilitators to present parent education forums;
3) support youth leadership opportunities, peer intervention and mentoring programs, and drug-free clubs in local schools;
4) increase community and parent involvement by promoting drug-free activities for families; and
5) involve under-represented populations in the activities and leadership of the coalition.CA/NCF
