Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)
Lake Geauga Center on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse is the fiscal agent for the Chardon Community Action Team/H.A.N.D.S. (Harvesting Assets Needed for a Desirable Society). The Chardon Community Action Team / H.A.N.D.S. serves Chardon , Chardon Township, Hambden Township, portions of Munson Township, Ohio, a rural area with a population of approximately 20,000. The goals of the coalition are to 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and over time among adults by addressing the factors in a community that serve to increase the risk of substance abuse and the factors that serve to minimize the risk of substance abuse and 2) strengthen the collaboration among communities, governments, and private non-profit agencies to support community coalition efforts to prevent and reduce substance abuse. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) Increase the perception of harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD);
2) Support middle and high school peer prevention activities;
3) Support the Geauga Lyric Theater's youth programs;
4) Increase youths' protective factors as defined by Search Institute's Asset Development;
5) Provide education, and training on the developmental assets;
6) Support clerk/server training and compliance checks;and
7) Recruit and strengthen the community coalition.
