Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $87,880)

The Genesis Counseling Center is the fiscal agent for the OAKWOOD Coalition. The coalition serves the two communities of Oaklyn and Woodlynne, New Jersey. These communities border the City of Camden which is plagued by blight, drugs, and crime.
The goals of the Oakwood Coalition are to: 1) reduce both the rate and early onset age of substance use among youth in Oaklyn and Woodlynne; and 2)enhance and strengthen collaboration among residents, businesses, and organizations, private and public agencies, within and among the communities of Oaklyn and Woodlynne.
The OAKWOOD Drug-Free Communities Program grew out of the commitment of each community's Municipal Alliance to identify mechanisms for helping Oaklyn and Woodlynne deal with the problem of alcohol and drugs in the lives of their youth and in their community. The OAKWOOD Coalition will implement the following strategies to achieve the project goals:
1) enhance community awareness of real, identified problems of drug and alcohol use and abuse among Oaklyn and Woodlynne youth;
2) expand, enhance, and strengthen coalition-building efforts to mobilize coordinated, integrated community activism in confronting identified problems of drug and alcohol use and abuse among Oaklyn and Woodlynne youth;
3) provide early substance abuse prevention and intervention for Oaklyn and Woodlynne youth; and
4) integrate parents and families into the education and treatment of at-risk children. CA/NCF
