Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $99,423)
The Sumter Citizens serves the South Sumter community, a rural area with a population of 3,365 which is almost 90% African American. The goals of the program are to: (1) strengthen the capacity of the Sumter Citizens to promote positive change within their community and (2) promote the development of youth in the targeted area as a means of preventing and reducing substance abuse. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies: (1) organize and convene community discussions on at least three key issues of importance to the coalition -- "Keeping Kids Alcohol Free", "Strategies for Action" and "A Community for all Generations - Teens and Adults Working Together"; (2) expand external funding to support the coalition; (3) conduct youth outreach for job training and or educational placement; (4) increase meaningful opportunities for youth to become involved in the community; and (5) enhance the capacity of the coalition's after school program.CA/NCF
